In the last couple of years, I have noticed that many of my Vancouver Cake clients have misconceptions about custom cake design. I'm hear to tell you the truth and make you aware of some of the dangers involved with custom cake design.
1.) Most Cake Designers make unhealthy and unnatural cakes.
Have you ever wondered what's in the cake that you are serving to your family, friends and children?
Preservatives, Vegetable Shortening and tons of chemicals which are masked by loads of icing sugar and flavoured extracts. Sounds healthy and delicious doesn't it?
Well, the sad truth is that many Cake Designers use most, if not all of these unhealthy ingredients in their cakes. Not only that, but many will flash freeze your cake or weeks or months before it even hits your mouth.
At Lyttle Bake Shop, all of my cakes are made completely from scratch, so I know exactly what's in them. I use only the freshest ingredients, are made fresh to order and are never frozen. My butterceams are light, fluffy and will melt-in-your-mouth!

2.) Many Cake Designers do not follow the health codes by Health Canada and don't use clean, sanitized kitchens.
Health risks from not cleaning the kitchen properly can occur, leading to many food borne illnesses like campylobacter, E.Coli, and Salmonella. Each is caused by bacteria and can make people very ill or even cause death. This is something you should take very seriously.

If a Cake Designer is offering an extremely low price, I would be weary. Chances are they are using boxed cakes or unhealthy, cheap ingredients. Remember, this food is entering your body. All-natural ingredients are expensive yes, but your cake will not only be healthier, it'll taste much better as well.
Another reason why a cake designer would offer such low prices is because they are not confident in their talent or they don't invest much time in your cake, thus not charging much for their time.
